It would be wonder enough that stars and planets hang in the vastness of the universe, but it is even more miraculous that eventually, after eons of observation, humans saw movement and patterns in this chaos, which changed our entire framework for understanding our world. This piece celebrates the wonder of our universe, and also the signal embedded in the movement of heavenly bodies that there is an underlying order. By being present and observing closely, we are able to detect the sense, order and meaning in the seeming chaos of the natural world. What could be more miraculous than that?

I made the fabric for this quilt by hand painting and printing cotton fabric and nonwoven polyester with acrylic and fabric paints. Some of the “orbs” are directrly printed on the fabric, while others were cut using a Cricut Silhouette machine. I added embellishment with acrylic and fabric pens. Much of the quilting using metallic thread.
