Moonrise Over Kyoto

2025

37"H X 43"W

I found most of the fabrics in this quilt when I traveled to Japan in 2024 with a group of fiber artists. I purchased a few packs of fabric swatches (8”x12”) and a few half yards of beautifully soft, textured indigo blue goods that I considered distinctly Japanese, along with some variegated sashiko thread. Once I was back home, to those I added a few hand-dyed fat quarters I had made along with some scraps of blue shot cotton I dug out of a bin in my studio.  With all these treasures arrayed on my work table, I challenged myself to use only these items, in their entirety, to design a quilt that captured some sensibility from my travels in Japan.  That’s how Moonlight Over Kyoto was created, using a combination of piecing, applique, hand and machine stitching.
