This work is a composite of twelve individual pieces, each hand-embroidered, drawn and appliqued, and mounted rustically on canvas. Each piece measures under or around 16.”
I created these pieces referencing photographs I took at the Women’s March January 21, 2017, the day after the first inauguration of DJT as the president of the United States. Close to 500,000 outraged women and girls of every age, race, class, and background marched peacefully in Washington, DC, along with many supportive men, while hundreds of thousands more marched at locations around the country. The march was an expression of collective dread, and a caution against regressive oppression threatened in Trump’s policies and misogynistic campaign rhetoric . Looking back, the protest was prescient. This piece remains all too relevant, for since then, decades of progress on women’s rights, civil and human rights have been rolled back precipitously.
