Palimpsest

Complete quilt

2015

A palimpsest is a manuscript that has been altered or overwritten, but which still retains traces of the original work. I made this quilt a few months after my mother died. I did not realize until I was well into it the quilt was about that loss, and more generally, about how one generation passes on hopes, values, identity, and unfinished business to the next, who then carries it forward into a changing world.

Process/materials:
I began this quilt as an improvisation, with the intention of exploring the use of textures, layers, and translucent materials. The fabrics range from commercial and hand-dyed cottons to prints that I designed, figures from Renaissance art colorized and reprinted on cotton, upholstery and dress fabrics, organza, mesh, tulle, and silk.
