I designed this quilt as an anniversary gift for my husband for our 35th anniversary. The motif (swoop, oval, circle) that repeats in the blocks is based on my engagement ring, which he designed for me.
Taken purely as an abstract composition, the form of this piece emphasizes shape and line and plays with scale and repetition. The way that the shapes abut from block to block recombines the repeating motif to create new shapes that further abstract the subject.
In addition, the contrast of darker and lighter values create depth, with some shapes taking the foreground and some retreating. The dimensions of the quilt, the use of curved lines that move the viewer’s eye around the piece, and the range of sizes of the shapes provide visual variety. The uneven edge is a characteristic of many of my quilts.
Materials: Hand-dyed and printed cotton fabrics and commercial dupioni silk.
